about

Whenever we get together to play as Music For Hard Times we also record the session. Firstly, for our own reference; it's nice to have documents of our playing over time and secondly to produce a stock of material to collate and present to friends and fans in some form - CDRs, CDs, digital downloads etc.

Our playing is invariably improvised and while this does not always guarantee an entirely satisfactory listening experience every time, many repeat-worthy pieces of music emerge from this process. And occasionally there'll be a single session where we feel that every piece holds up to repeated listenings. August 30 2011 was one of those sessions for us and so we released that evening in it's entirety as a limited edition CDR - 8:30:11 (dockingstation.bandcamp.com/album/8-30-11)

The same method of album compilation is used here where all of the album tracks originate from a single session and in this case the date was April the 23rd 2012 hence the title 4 23 12.

The titles used for each of the individual tracks are portmanteaus that hint at the the instrumentation. eg: Basstacean = Bass + Crustacean, Skab = Skatchbox + Plate etc The order of the pieces has been rearranged to what we feel is a better sequence for continuous listening but by observing the #s at the end of each track it is possible to recreate the exact order in which they were played.

And in case you were wondering why track 5 is missing; the recording was cut short by a failing minidisc player.

We hope you enjoy this album documenting an evening with Music For Hard Times.
